c1856 Lithograph engravings (4) by J M Stanley for USPRR Westward Ho
Professionally framed, this is a collection of four antique engravings from c1856 by John Mix Stanley of the USPRR Pacific railroad Westward Ho.
In 1853 Congress passed a bill ordering the Secretary of War to prepare a report detailing all possible railroad routes to the Pacific Ocean. The Secretary of War, Jefferson Davis, assigned the task of exploring those routes to several expedition parties. The exploration of the Northern Route, from St. Paul to Puget Sound, was commanded by Isaac I. Stevens, the new governor of Washington Territory.
John Mix Stanley (1814-1872), was born and raised in New York. He first came West as a draughtsman in General Stephen Watts Kearney's expedition to San Diego, under the W. H. Emory. After being discharged from the Army, he traveled independenly to Oregon in July 1847, intent upon depicting accurate portraits of Native Americans.
Of the eleven artists that accompanied the various surveys, John Mix Stanley covered the Pacific Northwest (another survey artist, Gustav Sohon, also depicted the Northwest) and his work is represented more than any other artist.

? 19th century painting on Wood from Maine - Joseph Davis 1811-1865
Found in the antiques mall "Little Yellow School House" in Bangor Maine area while on vacation in 2016. I bought it because the clothes and furnishings look c1820 and the style of painting looks like a folk art itinerant artist. The painting is on some kind of wood plywood and looks 19th century, preowned, minor chips to the corners of the board and if it was framed in the past or perhaps the top to a box or something, ...the plywood art was now unframed and in an antiques mall booth. So I bought it as a souvenir of my trip to Maine.
Looks like the work of Joseph Davis
not signed or otherwise labeled
age unknown ...looks old. It was not framed when I bought it and looked old and used so I put it in an antique wood frame, under glass, to protect it for further handling. It hangs beautifully on my bedroom wall.
I cannot date the wood board. My best measurement is 14 7/8" x 11 7/8". Plywood board has minor chips to corners since it apparently lost whatever frame or prior use for which it was designed. I found an artist by the name of Joseph Davis who did this style portraiture for his clients. He was a folk artist and this was his template of painting his subjects.

Wood Statues Warrior and Lady Hawaiian?
solid wood. Please let me know if you recognize these figures... Are they Hawaiian? I haven't found any similarly clothed figures on the internet. I've been to Hawaii and I feel like it could be Hawaiian / Polynesian and looks kind of like the large art sculptures one sees in nice hotels and restaurants in Hawaii or in stores in Waikiki shopping district.
These are made of wood, hand sculpted. I see no makers mark or signature. I bought these from a high end consignment store in Nashville Tn where individuals sell their items when moving or redecorating.
Type of wood - unknown by me - is it Koa?
Each weighs about 12 lbs unpacked
The base is about 8"x8" square
Each sculpture stands about 25 to 25.5" tall
The girl has a darker patina than the man
The girl is slightly taller than the man. He appears to be a warrior and his costume indicates he wears only a loin cloth with no rear covering.
She wears only a wrap around skirt
Both are accompanied by a pet (dog?)
The wood has been carved apparently for a while as thee is dust in some crevices and the base of the girl has an age related non structural crack that does not affect its stability and is not really noticeable unless you are visually inspecting the piece.
since I am not a wood expert, someone who knows how to care for wood should clean them and perhaps apply the appropriate wood oil to bring out the natural beauty and grain of the wood

Franz Johann Joseph von Reilly (August 18, 1766 – July 6, 1820) was an Austrian author, humorist, cartographer, and map publisher active in the late 18th century and early 20th century. Joseph was born in Vienna, Austria, the the son of court master John Reilly. He initially worked in the Austrian Civil Service, but was apparently unpaid and unsuccessful in that operation,
quitting the position after 3 years. With significant wealth inherited from his father, Reilly dedicated himself to printing and cartography, publishing several major atlases between 1789 and 1806. He is most famous for publishing the Grosser Deutscher Atlas (1794 - 1796), Schauplatz der Five Parts der Welt the first world atlas fully published and produced by an Austrian. There may have been 830 sheets relating to Europe cartography. After the school atlas (1791–92) and the general description of the earth (3 volumes, 1792–93), he published the first (complete) Austrian world atlas with the title Grosser deutscher Atlas from 1794 to 1796 .
During his career he produced thousands of maps and multiple atlases, but retired form cartography in 1806.
c1860 Framed Photo Man in Hat ?Masonic cuff links?
Antiques Academy at burwoodhallgolfbnb loves to research curiosities, antiques, possible heirlooms, vintage items that have a story to tell. Read our blogs and about the academy. The writing on the back of this picture leads me to think it was written by Dr Milton H Omstead to his wife in Petersburg Ind. Dr. MH Omstead was born 6/4/09 and died 4/3/1978. While pictures on line of Dr Milton H Omstead favor the gentleman in the antique photo, i don't think the photo is Dr. Milton H Omstead. I think it is either the Doctors grandfather Albert H Omstead born 3/15/1853 (died 3/15/1929) or Dr. Omsteads' father, Harvey Jacob Omstead born 12/18/76 (died 12/24/1955 Ft Wayne Ind. The clues are the clothing the antique photograph displays and the type of photo. It looks like a photo made c 1870-1900 (before Dr. Omstead was born). The Wood Frame containing the photo can be seen in many civil war era pictures and looks c1870. The sitter in the antique photo looks to be well dressed, holding leather gloves and, using a loop, it looks like his cufflink has the symbol of the masonic lodge. Perhaps a clue to whether this is Dr. Omstead's father or grandfather. I think MH Omstead was asking his wife to get copies of the picture made in order to share the image with family members. I found some family members spell their name Olmstead. Is this family associated with the Frederic Law Olmstead, famous c1900 landscape architect?
Framed under glass, Unpacked wt 3 lb s. frame size 12 x 14 image opening 8 x 10
This is a c1860 stacked wood frame with gilt inner edge. Photo is under glass. A man in a hat. Dressed nice his cuff links (under a loop) look like they might have a masonic symbol. Bought in an antiques Mall in Columbia TN .
I took it apart and LUCKILY there was a lot of info written on the back. M. Omstead wrote a long instruction to Mrs. Milton H Omstead Petersburg Indiana #11-18825C and instructed her to make 3 copies of the picture. Also to have copies made that were busts only cropped above the wrist. Faintly (faded) name on top of the picture back looks to be James D Albert ?Mitchell?? or something and might refer to the people to whom Dr. Omstead wants his wife to give copies of the picture .

Sisters Married in Double Ceremony Celebrate Double Golden Wedding
Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Omstead ........Mr. and Mrs. Leo Morley
Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Omstead of Hamilton and Mr. and Mrs. Leo Morley of Pleasant Lake celebrated their double golden wedding anniversary Sunday, October 3, at the Omstead home in Hamilton, starting with a potluck dinner at noon for the relatives and holding open house in the afternoon for friends. A bountiful dinner was served to fifty-eight of the immediate family at noon.
The house was decorated much as it was fifty years ago. In the archway hung a large floral bell and horseshoe, similar to the ones the couples stood under at their first double ceremony. The rest of the house was decorated with large pots of baby mums, asters and bittersweet. The dining room table was beautifully decorated with candies, a large bowl of punch and two large three tiered wedding cakes both topped with miniature brides and grooms. Cake, punch, canapés, fancy cookies, mints and nuts, were served to over two hundred guests. Mrs. Omstead and Mrs. Morley were each presented with an orchid from the children.
The Omsteads have four children, Dr. and Mrs. T. W. Omstead of Anderson; Dr. and Mrs. Milton Omstead of Petersburg; Mr. and Mrs. Albert Omstead of Spring Valley, N. Y., and Mr. and Mrs. Wallace Holman of Hastings, Minn., and ten grandchildren. Harvey and Drake Omstead of Anderson; Jimmy, Sarah Jane and Bobbie Omstead of Petersburg; Larry and Linda Omstead of Spring Valley, N. Y.; and Harry, John and Junior Holman of Hastings, Minn.
Mr. and Mrs. Morley and Mr. and Mrs. Omstead were married at the old Dewire homestead at Edon, O., on September 29, 1898.
The Omsteads also took up their residence on a farm near Alvarado and more recently moved to Angola where Mr. Omstead was employed by the Angola Lumber Co. They likewise have retired and for the last seven years have lived in Hamilton.
