c1820 Silhouette Picture Man in c1860 Wood Frame faux Tortoise Shell or Granit application
Found in Antiques Mall in Columbia TN. This looks like a c1820 hand cut paper silhoutte under glass in a c1860 stacked wood frame. The frame is one that is built in 3 layers of framing to give it depth. Some of the layers have been marblized to look like ?granite or perhaps they were going for a tortoises shell look. The back opening is 8 x 10 and covered with a aged thin piece of plywood. It is dusty and needs someone to take it apart and clean it. I did quickly take it apart to see if the silhouette is a print on paper or a real cut out and hopefully find some inscription. The antique plywood has been on the frame so long that the wood leached a little onto the back of the paper leaving a wood shadow. The silhouette is a copy onto the paper it is not a real cutout. There is no name of the sitter or other info. i put a piece of WAX PAPER over the back of the print before reinstalling the plywood backing.
These antique wood frames are collectible in their own right and people use them to reframe other art or antique prints.

Vincent Van Gogh... " From 30 July 1869 to 10 May 1873, Vincent worked as the youngest clerk at The Hague’s branch of the international art dealer Goupil & Cie. Goupil, founded in 1829, was one of Europe’s best-known fine art and print dealers, with its headquarters in Paris and other branches in London, Brussels, Berlin and New York. The premises in The Hague opened in 1861 at Plaats 14, thanks to the influence of Vincent’s uncle Cent (Vincent van Gogh, 1820–1888)....Vincent started at Goupil & Cie in 1869 thanks to the mediation of his Uncle Cent. As the firm’s youngest employee, Vincent was responsible for packing, unpacking, overlaying photographs and etchings with tissue paper, and helping to crate paintings. He worked long days, kept busy and enjoyed himself. When his brother Theo went to work for Goupil in Brussels in 1873, Vincent congratulated him on getting a job with this “fine company”. "
